Once upon a time I was a classroom teacher. I taught for 7 years in public classrooms, and I LOVED many parts of it, but always felt something was missing. Some of the learners I had taught needed to be freed from the tight boundaries around them.
After starting a family and then sending our own children to school, the excitement for traditional education waned, and the missing pieces were magnified. We learned that our son was profoundly dyslexic and that the school was not able to provide the academic support necessary. Our girls were not thriving socially or academically. This inspired us to begin homeschooling with all three of them!
We loved homeschooling, but noticed our children needed more. We began researching and learning about alternative learning environments, and fell head over heels for the disruptive classroom movement.
Acton Academy was the perfect match to what our family –and so many of my students– needed. We are bringing the movement to the East Bay Area and are thrilled to be joined by fellow learners!

Laura lived on both US coasts and in between as a child, then settled into Vanderbilt University for her undergraduate studies in the College of Arts and Science. After being awarded the highly competitive Walter Wattles Fellowship at Lloyd’s of London, Laura worked in the aviation insurance industry in New York City.
Deciding to follow her calling into the world of education, Laura returned to Nashville and earned her Master of Education at Peabody College. This led her to her work at the Oklahoma Arts Institute, creating fine arts education programs for teachers and talented high school students.
Laura married Jeff Sandefer and is the happy mother of Sam and Charlie and step-mother to Taite. It is the inspiration of these children that led Laura and Jeff to co-found Acton Academy.
Her greatest hero is her mother who was a Master Teacher. Her wisest mentor is her father who sent her off to college with two words of advice: "Be curious."
